AMBITION
A not-for-profit movement to re-establish street parties in the UK and use them as a basis for strengthening communities, tackling isolation and to encourage the sharing of resources amongst neighbours
WHAT WE DID
Paul Twivy co-founded The Big Lunch with Sir Tim Smit of the Eden Project
Provided lots of ideas and a kit of parts but encouraged people to run parties their way: dedicated web-site, ideas booklets, advertising and PR
Reduced barriers; e.g. street closure
Harnessed every form of motivation: indulgence, curiosity, solidarity, practicality, self-interest, social justice
OUTCOMES
730,000 participants in 2009, rising steadily to 9.3 million participants in 2017
Has catalysed change across a wide variety of communities in the UK, including the most deprived and is now going international in its tenth year
82 per cent of participants felt closer to their neighbours and thought that it made a positive impact on their community
